Travel Responsibly: As the region recovers from COVID-19, safety guidelines have evolved at attractions, restaurants, shops and hotels. Advance tickets or reservations remain recommended or necessary at many spots. Your best bet: Check online or call ahead.

Looking to plan an exceptional vacation — or perhaps a dreamy staycation? Philadelphia should be on your 2021 destination list.

But don’t take our word for it!

The City of Brotherly and Sisterly Love is one of just eight must-visit destinations to receive the Condé Nast Traveler editors’ nod in ”The Best Destinations in the World: The 2021 Gold List”.

There’s really something special about Philadelphia, about the way it doesn’t care for pretense or about what anyone else thinks of it. - Condé Nast Traveler

Even more noteworthy: Philadelphia is one of only three U.S. destinations (alongside Washington, D.C. and Kauai, Hawaii) to make the list, which is part of the publication’s annual best-of compilation and contains the places the editors “daydreamed about in lockdown.”

In the piece, writer Betsy Blumenthal names favorite Philly spots including Fairmount Park and the Schuylkill River Trail, Chinatown and the city’s wealth of historic attractions (we’ll forgive the reference to “Little Italy” rather than “Italian Market”).

Blumenthal also reflects on Philly’s collective attitude, saying, “There’s really something special about Philadelphia, about the way it doesn’t care for pretense or about what anyone else thinks of it.” Her takeaway is true but we can’t help calling attention to the praise Condé Nast Traveler and other major national press have heaped on Philly as of late.

The Gold List inclusion comes on the heels of a nine-page story in Travel + Leisure highlighting the diversity and creativity fueling the city’s neighborhoods and multiple inclusions in Esquire’s “Best New Restaurants in 2020” list.

Of course, the year began with Philadelphia as the only U.S. city on National Geographic Traveler’s annual “Best Trips” list.

We all need to look forward to a getaway right now and we couldn’t agree more that 2021 is the time to discover — or rediscover — Philadelphia.
